SUMMARY:Why Isn’t He Famous? Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, February 24 @ 7PM\nZoom Program\nTickets: $5/FHC Member\, $10/not-yet-a-member (purchase below) \nPresenters: Ruthann Tomassini\, FHC Researcher & Genealogist; Dr. Alfred DeMaria\, Jr.\, Medical and Laboratory Consultant\, Massachusetts Department of Public Health; and Dr. Edith Jolin\, Instructor\, Department of Medical Sciences and Education\, Boston University School of Medicine \nThe Framingham History Center (FHC) receives inquiries regarding Framingham people and places daily but recently\, two very synchronistic questions resulted in the creation of this program for Black History Month.  The first came from a Washington Post writer who was working on a story about Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller.  Upon learning more about Dr. Fuller’s history and his role in decoding Alzheimer’s disease\, the reporter asked “why isn’t he famous?”  At the same time a separate inquiry came in concerning Dr. Jane Hinton who also lived in Framingham and was one of the first Black women in the US to become a doctor of veterinary medicine.  Upon further investigation\, the FHC’s research volunteer\, Ruthann Tomassini\, discovered a deep familial connection between Dr. Solomon Fuller and Jane’s father Dr. William Hinton. Both men were pioneering black physicians who made incredible advancements in their fields of study but their findings were neglected by academia during their lifetimes.  Join us to learn more about the contributions of\, and friendship between\, the Fuller and Hinton families and why they should be famous! \nImage: Dr. Fuller is seated to the right of Dr. Alzheimer in a German laboratory

SUMMARY:Boston’s Revolutionary Martyrs
DESCRIPTION:Boston’s Revolutionary Martyrs\n\nThe Framingham History Center hosts:\nBoston’s Revolutionary War Martyrs: Revolution Speaker Series\nFriday\, March 4\, 2022\n7PM\nVillage Hall on the Common\, 2 Oak St\, Framingham \nThe Boston Massacre is one of the most famous events in American history\, but many details about the episode remain mysterious. Was it really the first fatal violence of the Revolution? What do we know about the most famous victim\, Crispus Attucks? How many victims ultimately died from the shooting? All the soldiers and all the people shot were male\, but what role did women play in the event? How many criminal trials followed\, and what determined their outcome? Was the famous Massacre engraving really made by Paul Revere? How did Revolutionary leaders like Dr. Joseph Warren keep the memory of the Massacre alive? And how did the idea of martyrdom shape the cause of American liberty? Why and when did the Massacre orations cease to occur? \nJoin authors J.L. Bell and Christian Di Spigna along with historian Katie Turner Getty\, as they discuss these questions and explore how that “Bloody Massacre perpetrated in King Street…” became an indelible part of our national memory. \nPresented by the Dr. Joseph Warren Foundation\, National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution\, and Massachusetts Freemasons. \nTickets: $15

SUMMARY:FHC Annual Meeting & Remembering Libby Franck
DESCRIPTION:FHC Annual Meeting & Remembering Libby Franck\n\nFramingham History Center Annual Meeting and Remembering Libby Franck\nTuesday\, March 8\, 2022 @ 7PM\nVillage Hall on the Common\, 2 Oak Street \nAn Annual Meeting followed by a tribute to storyteller Libby Franck and her legacy. \nIt’s been one year and four months since we lost our beloved storyteller Libby Franck and It is time to come together and celebrate her life and work. For over 15 years Libby brought to life the untold stories of numerous Framingham women\, including suffragette Josephine Collins\, 19th century author Edna Dean Proctor and matriarch Kate Ware Smith. Many of the costumes worn by Libby to portray these women are now in the Framingham History Center’s collection along with her papers.  Former Volunteer of the Year\, Nancy Prince has also created a finding aid that will allow access to Libby’s own research and her storytelling process.  After a brief annual meeting\, please join us in remembering our friend as you view a display of her costumes mounted next to kiosks showing video clips from her programs. \nWhile voting during the annual meeting portion of this program is restricted to FHC members and donors\, this program is open to all.
