SUMMARY:“Murder & Mayhem in MetroWest Boston” Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:  \nPresenters: Kevin A. Swope and James L. Parr \nHybrid Program: Zoom and on-site at Edgell Memorial Library (3 Oak Street\, Framingham) \n  \nMetroWest is known for its rolling farmland\, winding rivers and quaint white churches facing green town commons. But looks can be deceiving. Tales from these small towns captured headlines and shocked readers across the state with lurid details of betrayal\, cruelty\, greed and murder. Nina Danforth\, spurred on by love and jealousy\, made a midnight call to the home of Andrew Emery in Framingham seeking revenge. The murder of spinster Mabel Page in Weston sent a man to the electric chair\, and forty years before Lizzie Borden\, the grisly axe murder of a husband and wife sent shock waves through the terrified town of Natick. Authors James L. Parr and Kevin A. Swope reveal the stories behind these crimes and the motives of the desperate criminals who perpetrated them. \n  \nRegister here: https://framinghamhistory.org/events/murder-mayhem-in-metrowest-boston-book-launch/ \n  \nThis program is supported by a grant from the Bridge Street Fund\, a special initiative of Mass Humanities.

SUMMARY:Explore the Art of the Common
DESCRIPTION:The Framingham History Center (FHC) is very excited to present this FREE community event featuring art-in-the-making on the Framingham Centre Common and its environs. The inspiration for this event comes from the watercolor “View of the Centre Common of Framingham\,” painted by Captain Daniel Bell in 1808. View this painting as part of the FHC’s “Framingham’s Top 10” exhibit\, and then tour the Common to see how today’s artists interpret the same space 213 years later. \nTen local artists will set up their easels on and around the Common to paint as Captain Bell did – en plein air. Watch the artists at work and take in the history of this iconic New England setting either on a self-guided or docent-led tour. The docent tours will begin every half hour from 2:00– 3:30 p.m. Also enjoy fun for the whole family with a special scavenger hunt that includes making art! \nArtists’ paintings will be available for purchase at an online auction to benefit the Framingham History Center. This limited time auction will run from October 5-9. More details to follow at framinghamhistory.org \nHosted by Framingham History Center together with the Danforth and Framingham Centre Common Cultural District \n

SUMMARY:A Sign of the Times: WWI Poster Collection
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Erika Schneider\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Art History & Museum Studies Coordinator\nZoom Program \nWhen the United States entered the Great War in April 1917\, the government launched a full-scale home front galvanization to increase American support and bolster the Allies’ economy.  Some of the most well-known posters include James Montgomery Flagg’s iconic “I Want You” poster and Howard Chandler Christy’s image\, “Fight or Buy Bonds.” As part of this effort\, the US government distributed posters across the country\, mostly to local post offices\, and the Framingham History Center has several of these works.  This presentation considers graphic design in the context of the history of art to demonstrate the influence of established tropes and the ingenuity of early twentieth-century illustrators to establish an American style.
