SUMMARY:A Sign of the Times: WWI Poster Collection
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Erika Schneider\, Ph.D.\, Professor of Art History & Museum Studies Coordinator\nZoom Program \nWhen the United States entered the Great War in April 1917\, the government launched a full-scale home front galvanization to increase American support and bolster the Allies’ economy.  Some of the most well-known posters include James Montgomery Flagg’s iconic “I Want You” poster and Howard Chandler Christy’s image\, “Fight or Buy Bonds.” As part of this effort\, the US government distributed posters across the country\, mostly to local post offices\, and the Framingham History Center has several of these works.  This presentation considers graphic design in the context of the history of art to demonstrate the influence of established tropes and the ingenuity of early twentieth-century illustrators to establish an American style.

SUMMARY:CHALLENGER: Soaring with Christa McAuliffe
DESCRIPTION:Who is America’s favorite teacher? Ask anyone about Christa McAuliffe and they will tell you exactly where they were when the Challenger shuttle launched; however\, few people understand who Mrs. McAuliffe really was. America’s Teacher in Space was an educational pioneer and her goals and accomplishments are explored in this multi-media performance experience. \nHistory At Play™ Founder and Artistic Director Judith Kalaora travelled to Mrs. McAuliffe’s hometown of Framingham\, MA and to Concord\, NH to discover the true story behind the incredible teacher and American Pioneer. Now\, she shares Christa’s spirit with you. Suitable for all ages. \nFirst performed for a live Framingham audience in 2016\, Judith is back as Christa during the 35th anniversary of the tragic Shuttle Challenger explosion. Entertaining\, educational\, and emotional this performance is not to be missed. \nThis program is the first of many programs to be funded by the Libby Franck Storytelling Fund and is free to the public. \n

SUMMARY:Reinterpreting the ”Eames Massacre”
DESCRIPTION:In February of 1676\, at the height of King Philip’s War\, an altercation occurred on Mount Wayte between the Eames family and nine Nipmuc men. The fight resulted in the death and kidnapping of multiple members of the Eames family\, and the destruction of the Eames homestead. The “Eames Massacre\,” as it has since come to be called\, has been interpreted as one of the significant moments in Framingham’s history\, and the Eames family has largely been painted as the sole victims. But the truth is that this event was more complex and mutually destructive than the traditional story has led us to believe. Curator Stacen Goldman will reconsider all aspects of the “Eames Massacre\,” its context and its reverberations into the Framingham of the present.

SUMMARY:AstroNights LIVE: Galaxies Galore
DESCRIPTION:In May\, the constellation Virgo dominates the sky – it’s the second largest constellation in terms of area. Constellations are not just funny connect-the-dot shapes\, we use them to designate regions in the night sky\, the way state and city borders signify regions on a map. The Virgo region of the sky is jam-packed with deep-sky objects visible through small telescopes\, and even binoculars in some cases. Many of these objects are galaxies that are part of the massive Virgo Galaxy Cluster. Galaxy clusters are the largest gravitationally-bound systems in the Universe\, and thus are fascinating laboratories for exploring fundamental questions about gravity. However\, you don’t have to be an expert on gravity to enjoy the diverse beauty of these galaxies!

SUMMARY:Collecting Dennison History
DESCRIPTION:Panel of Presenters: Michelle Geller\, Patricia Lavin\, James Parr\, Nancy Prince\, Anita Rotenberg\, & Susan Silva \nGiven the months of stay-at-home directives during the pandemic\, many people have been rediscovering buried treasure in their attics.  As a result\, we have been getting a lot of calls from people wanting to learn more about their Dennison Manufacturing Company ephemera.  Their questions have caused us to dig more deeply into our own vast Dennison collection where we have found even more fascinating facts about the company.  In this way\, Dennison lives on and as Pat Lavin\, author of WELCOME to Dennison Manufacturing Co. says\, “it’s forever giving.”  Pat is among a volunteer corps of Dennison enthusiasts who help us research these questions. \nWhat is it about Dennison products that attracts so many collectors?  Join us for a panel discussion featuring collectors from the East Coast to the West Coast.  They will reveal how they got into collecting Dennison items while displaying some of their most prized possessions over a Zoom webinar\, and the unique ways in which they share their passion for these iconic products. \nTickets can be purchased up until 6pm on 5/6. Questions? Email laura@framinghamhistory.org. *This event is part of the 2021 Program Package*

SUMMARY:AstroNights LIVE: No Planet B: Exoplanets and Earth Appreciation
DESCRIPTION:As we approach Earth day\, our planet – and its unique ability to support life of all kinds – is at the forefront of our minds. For centuries\, humans have looked up at the sky and wondered: is there anywhere out there like Earth? While we haven’t found evidence to suggest the presence of life on the planets close by\, there are plenty of other places to look. This month\, AstroNights is all about the planets outside of our solar system: exoplanets. We’ll talk about how we find them\, how many there are\, and how they compare to our home planet. Plus\, we’ll show you where and when to look in the sky to see some of our nearest celestial neighbors\, Venus and Mars.

SUMMARY:Wallace Nutting: Father of the Colonial Revival Movement
DESCRIPTION:Framingham’s Wallace Nutting was an American renaissance man.  He was a minister\, photographer\, furniture maker\, preservationist\, and the father of the Colonial Revival movement.  From his factory in Framingham\, Nutting produced prints and furniture meant to evoke “old New England\,” which became must-have decorative items for the growing American middle class.  His style influenced design\, art\, and architecture for half a century.  Linda Palmer\, author of Wallace Nutting: Father of the Colonial Revival Movement\, will share the highlights of a life well-lived. After thirty years of research\, Palmer has compiled a tremendous amount of material\, images\, and historical furniture that propel this book from a biography to a researcher’s guide to all things Nutting. Prepare for Palmer’s talk by purchasing her book here or read about Nutting on our Framingham’s Top 10 exhibition. \nThis pre-recorded program will be accessible for 24 hours with a ticket purchase. \nTickets can be purchased up until 10am on 4/15. Questions? Email laura@framinghamhistory.org. *This event is part of the 2021 Program Package*
